iWRITE, the Internet Writing Resource for the Innovative Teaching of English, was developed by Volker Hegelheimer and his team (see credits) as part of a research grant funded through a College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Faculty Development (LAS FacDev) Grant at Iowa State University.

One important goal of this project is to enhance student learning by providing learners of English as a Second Language (ESL) guided access to essays written by other ESL learners and annotated by experienced instructors. More specifically, through interacting with this web site, learners will

  1. increase their knowledge of the English grammar
  2. improve their ability to recognize a variety of written errors
  3. improve their writing ability, thereby better equipping them with what is needed to succeed in a university setting in the U.S.

Teachers can use this site to help their students learn more about typical mistakes ESL learners make in the writing process and also generate worksheets in the practice section. Currently, the project is syntactically oriented in that the focus lies on grammatical errors. Future development will include more qualitative suggestions dealing with the organization, content, and development of essays.

The five components of iWRITE are Solutions, Essays, Practice, Marking, and Corpus.
